Bollywood and controversies go hand in hand. Over the years, many bold and controversial directors have made equally controversial movies. While some were genuinely focused on the problem, the others were there just for titillation and cheap popularity for themselves and their movies. Here we compile a list of few recent and old bold movies which were held for controversy.
The newly released SLB’s movie Ram-Leela was held in a controversy the court banned the release of the movie. The Court feels that the title Ram-Leela allegedly hurt Hindu sentiments. 



Rajputs in Rajasthan have blocked the screening of Jodha Akbar, the big budget film, accusing Gowarikar of distorting history. According to them, Jodhaa was the daughter of Udai Singh of Marwar and was married to Salim, Akbar's son.  

Though highly acclaimed in the international film festivals, 'Bandit Queen' received as many accolades as it faced criticism. The movie is based on the life of a dacoit Phoolan Devi. However excess nudity, sex and violence lead the movie to Indian censor board, which was then banned. Meanwhile, Phoolan Devi herself tried to get a stay order to prevent the movie's release.
Deepa Mehta’s ‘Fire’ was ahead of time movie when homosexuality was not easily talked. The audiences went into frenzy at this first mainstream portrayal of a lesbian relationship - and protests and the usual drama by Shiv Sena supporters. There was a massive uproar throughout the nation between the protesters and the supporters of this path-breaking movie.
Members of the Shiv Sena were seen burning pirated DVDs of the movie and warning shopkeepers not to stock it as it violate Hindu religion and was consider as anti Hindu.
My Name is Khan political controversies well ahead of its release. It was reported that SRK was harassed by the immigration officers when he went to the USA to promote his movie. Besides he also ran into a tussle with Shiv Sena when he made a comment about Pakistani cricket players not coming to play in the IPL, resulting attacks on cinemas and booking centers.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Kurbaan is one of the few controversial movies. The movie gripped controversy after the Shiv Sena raised objection to the movie's poster that shows Kareena's bare back.
Apart from Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Hindu Janajagruti Samita revolted against the concept of Oh My God which according to them were an attack on age old rituals and beliefs. However, the movie received rave reviews and was screened uncut throughout the nation, resulting as one of the biggest hits of 2012.
A beautiful movie like Wake Up Sid was held in controversy by MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena), reason? For calling ‘Mumbai’ as ‘Bombay’. Though Karan Johar then apologized to MNS chief Raj Thakerey sorting out the matter. He further said that a disclaimer will now be carried in the beginning of the film.
The ban was demanded by Tamil Nadu and Muslim group for the film hurting Muslim community sentiments. Theatre owners where asked not to screen the movie despite of clearance from the cencor board.However, as the result the movie was screened every where except Tamil Nadu.
